The Dept of Communicative Sciences & Disorders at Cal State East Bay is hosting an all-day CE workshop on Saturday September 19th (9:00 am - 4:30 pm) presented by 3 SLPs (Dr. Nidhi Mahendra, Jennifer Kizner, and Sandra Deane) and an RN (Jean-Marie Mead) to address knowledge, skills and resources needed by SLPs for competency across the lifespan in palliative care.

Two things of interest are that this is one way for students to gain additional competency in dysphagia and also we've expanded the conversation to include adult and pediatric palliative care, as well as focus on racial/ethnic disparities in access to palliative care and the cultural diversity perspective around palliative care.

San Francisco State University National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association presents the following Continuing Education (CE) workshops October 17, 2015 from 9 am - 1 pm in Burk Hall Room 28

Bilingual Aphasia

Dr. Teresa Gray, CCC-SLP will discuss theoretical models of bilingual language processing, the nature of language impairment in bilingual aphasia and important aspects of assessment and language therapy for this population. Dr. Gray's research interests focus on bilingual aphasia and language access, the mechanisms of control in linguistic and non-linguistic contexts in bilingual aphasia, and the role of language rehabilitation and its short-term and long-term effects on functional communication.

Aphasia & the Life Participation Approach

Ms. Loren Tolbert, CCC-SLP will be speaking about the Life Participation Approach to Aphasia (LPAA). LPAA is a consumer-driven service-delivery approach that supports individuals with aphasia and others affected by it in achieving their immediate and longer term life goals. LPAA calls for a broadening and refocusing of clinical practice and research on the consequence of aphasia. It focuses on re-engagement in life, beginning with initial assessment and intervention and continuing, after hospital discharge, until the consumer no longer elects to have communication support.
