Our 13-year old son requires 1:1 support for certain activities, particularly during a theater class he takes in the fall (Sept. 2017- Feb. 2018) on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons. We also would like to have a Friday date night, and occasional help on other days, for example, during school breaks.
Our teen has multiple disabilities resulting from a stroke in utero affecting his vision, hearing, mobility, balance, posture, social interactions and attention. He is fully verbal, ambulatory, and independent in eating, grooming, dressing, toileting etc. He is extremely social and happy with a good sense of humor. He likes music, theater, writing, telling jokes, sports, friends, feeling like part of a group or a social scene. However, his non-verbal skills are affected and he requires scaffolding/support in social settings. He also only uses one hand so he needs support with many two-handed activities.
Your responsibilities would include: helping facilitate appropriate social interactions, monitoring for safety, keeping him engaged/attentive in tasks, driving to and from various events (we will pay mileage if you provide your own vehicle, which is preferred), helping out with light housework and basic cooking when working in our home. We have a younger son (age 11) who is neurotypical who will also be your responsibility at least one afternoon/evening per week. You need to be high-energy, compassionate, calm and positive. Experience working with special needs children preferred. Background check, fingerprinting and TB test required.
Location: SF Castro district.
The start date is 8/14/17. The position is Wednesday, Friday, Sunday afternoons plus additional dates as needed (with mutual agreement) through Feb. 2018 at least, ideally through June 2018 and possibly beyond.
The rate is $16-18 per hour, depending on experience, and is funded through the Golden Gate Regional Center.
